The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals (ICTR and ICTY) will be holding the Second Workshop on Crimes of Sexual Violence, 4 October - 6 October 1997, in Arusha, Tanzania. Following the conclusion of the event, a Press Conference has been scheduled by the Prosecutor, Justice Louise Arbour and the Deputy Prosecutor, Mr. Bernard Muna. It will be held on Monday, 6 October 1997 at the Novotel Mount Meru Hotel at 1 p.m.

This workshop is the second of its kind. In March 1997, the Prosecutor held the First Roundtable on Crimes of Sexual Violence. The meeting was closed to outside participants, and was aimed at identifying obstacles in investigating and prosecuting crimes of sexual violence. Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the First Lady of the United States of America, attended a session. In her second workshop, the Prosecutor intends to specifically address those issues which require more particularised attention. It will thus focus on the efficient investigation and effective prosecution of such crimes within the International Tribunals.

The Workshop will also be attended by Officials of the Rwandese Government: the Secretary General of the Ministry of Gender of the Rwandan Government Marie-Claire Mukasine, and Mr. Justin Gakwaza, First Deputy of the Prosecutor General for the Supreme Court of Rwanda. Representatives of Rwandan and former Yugoslav NGOs have also been invited to attend.

Additionally, Ms. Angela King, Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, will participate in the workshop. Finally, outside participants have been invited to provide relevant expertise to the meeting. These experts are: Mr .Chris MacAdam from the South African Truth Commission; and Mr. Eugene Rugal of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.
