14 December 2012 UNMICT/PR4e MICT website available in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and Kinyarwanda The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) has launched the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) and Kinyarwanda versions of its website as part of its efforts to bring its work closer to the communities of the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
The website has been maintained in the two working languages of the Mechanism, English and French, since July 2012. The new versions of the MICT’s website in BCS and Kinyarwanda will enhance the MICT’s ability to serve its mandate of continuing the essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
“The BCS and Kinyarwanda versions of the MICT’s website will play a significant role in ensuring transparency and facilitating access to information about the Mechanism by those communities most affected by its work,” said President Theodor Meron. The MICT’s website explains the structure and mandate of the Mechanism and provides access to key documents guiding the work of the institution. The content of the website will grow over time to include additional features on important functions of the Mechanism. “Information on the MICT and its work will now be more readily available to the public in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
A multilingual approach upholds the notion that justice must be seen to be done and further cements the legacy of the Tribunals,” commented the MICT’s Registrar, John Hocking. Established by the Security Council of the United Nations, the Mechanism is mandated to carry out a number of essential functions of the ICTY and the ICTR during and after the completion of their respective mandates.
The ICTR branch of the MICT was launched on 1 July 2012. The Hague branch of the MICT, which will take on functions derived from the ICTY, will commence operations on 1 July 2013.
