On Monday 25 October 2010, at its headquarters in Arusha Tanzania, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, will award the winners of the East African Youth Essays and Drawings Competition during an elaborate ceremony also marking the UN Day. The celebration is going to be attended by Ministers and Senior Cabinet members in charge of Education and East African Community Affairs, a representative of the German Embassy in Tanzania, UN officials as well as hundreds of students from schools which took part in the competition from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania.
Hundreds of entries were received in the competition. The first winners in each category (Essays and Drawings) from each country have been invited to attend the ceremony. The awards include a Lap Top Computer and schools books to each of the two top winners in each of the two categories – and a Desk Top Computer to the top winning schools in each category from each country. A total of 24 laptops computers and 12 desktop computers and many other prizes will be distributed.
The Competition was organized by the Tribunal with the support of the German Embassy as part of the Tribunal’s Educational and Outreach campaign to raise awareness of the youth in the region in the global fight against the culture of impunity. It involved students from Primary and Secondary schools in the region.
At the awards ceremony the Tribunal will also organize an exhibition on the work of the ICTR and genocide as well as display some of the outstanding entries of the competition.
