Detention of Hassan Ngeze, a former Editor in Chief of Kangura newspaper was today extended for another 30 days to enable the Prosecution complete its investigations.
The ruling was made by Judge Laïty Kama, the Tribunal's President, at the end of an inter partes hearing of a motion filed by the Prosecution requesting the extension in the case of Hassan Ngeze, who was arrested in Nairobi last month in connection with the 1994 killings in the territory of Rwanda. Ngeze is currently detained in the Tribunal's facility in Arusha.
The Prosecution had prayed to the court to grant the extension because of the complexity of the investigations; the difficulties in investigating in all the Rwanda prefectures, due to the constant fluctuations in safety; the necessity to analyse and asses all documents seized at the time of the arrest of the suspect; and, the need to present a concise and precise an indictment as possible.
Earlier, the Defence Counsel Mr. Kamau Ngata, from Kenya, had unsuccessfully requested the court to grant provisional release of the accused.
