Media Alert Composition of Chambers and Reassignment of Military Case to Trial Chamber I

(1) COMPOSITION OF ICTR TRIAL CHAMBERS

Following consultations with the Judges, it has been decided that the new composition of the ICTR Trial Chambers will be as follows:

Trial Chamber I: Judge Erik Møse, presiding, Judge Jai Ram Reddy and Judge Sergei Aleckseievich Egorov.

Trial Chamber II: Judge William H. Sekule, presiding, Judge Arlette Ramaroson and Judge Asoka de Zoysa Gunawardana

Trial Chamber III: Judge Lloyd George Williams, presiding, and Judge Andrésia Vaz, with Judge Egorov temporarily assigned to the Chamber pursuant to Rule 27(C) of the ICTR Rules of Procedure and Evidence.

The Trial Chambers’ work programme and judicial calendar is still being finalized. Further details about this will be given in due course. You will also be kept abreast of any further changes to the composition of the Trial Chambers.

(2) COMPOSITION OF ICTR APPEALS CHAMBER

The composition of the ICTR Appeals Chamber has also changed. Its current composition is as follows:

ICTR Appeals Chamber: Pursuant to Article 13 (3) of the Statute, the President, after consultation with the permanent judges of the Tribunal, shall assign two of the permanent judges elected in accordance with Article 12 bis of the Statute to be members of the Appeals Chamber of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the Appeals Chamber of the International Tribunal for Rwanda. On 4 June 2003, Judge Erik Møse, President of ICTR assigned Judge Mehmet Gϋney and Judge Inés Mónica Weinberg de Roca to the Appeals Chambers of the two Tribunals.

(3) STATUS OF THE “MILITARY CASE”

Pursuant to Rule 19(A) of the ICTR Rules of Procedure and Evidence, the “Military Case” has been reassigned to Trial Chamber I. Previously the case was being heard by Trial Chamber III.

An informal status conference on the “Military Case”, involving the Trial Chamber, the Prosecution and Defence Counsel took place today, Friday 6 June 2003. On Monday 9 June 2003, a formal status conference in the presence of the four accused will be held. Once the status conference or a series of status conferences is completed, the date of the continuation or of the beginning de novo of the “Military Case” will be known. Please note that the status conference is a closed session.
