ICTR Prosecutor meets Rwanda President

The Prosecutor of International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Ms Carla Del Ponte met the President of Rwanda, H.E. Paul Kagame on Monday 9th April 2001 in Kigali and they discussed several areas of cooperation between the ICTR and the Government of Rwanda. During the meeting, the President of Rwanda reiterated his commitment to cooperate fully with the Tribunal, and to support the investigation of crimes allegedly committed by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in 1994.

Speaking to the Press after the meeting Ms. Del Ponte, said that she was happy with the cooperation she has received from the Government of Rwanda particularly in the area of possible investigations of RPF officers who may have been involved in violations of international humanitarian law. The Prosecutor General of Rwanda’s Supreme Court, Mr. Gerard Gahima, who was also present at the meeting, with the Press, said that the Rwanda Government supports the work of the ICTR Prosecutor's’Office and that there is on-going dialogue to resolve all issues of mutual concern.

Rwanda’s military prosecutor, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Rwigamba, who also attended the meeting, said: « We reiterate our determination to cooperate in dealing with suspects of genocide and other Crimes against humanity ».
