The President of the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Commission H.E. Mrs. Najat Al-Hajjaji began today a one-week visit to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) at the invitation of the ICTR. The purpose of the visit, the first of its kind, is to provide her with an opportunity to familiarize herself with the Tribunal’s work and achievements and to also explore ways and means to enhance the cooperation between the two institutions. H. E. Mrs. Al-Hajjaji is accompanied by Mr. Murad Hamaima, Minister Plenipotentiary, and Expert on Human Rights.

During her visit to the ICTR offices in Arusha, Tanzania , Mrs. Al-Hajjaji will meet with senior officials and staff of the Tribunal and discuss matters of mutual interest with the view of promoting a better understanding of the work of the ICTR in the international community in the fight against impunity, gross violations of human rights, and for the triumph of international justice.

The Tribunal is confident that her active support to human rights issues and its work will have a significant impact in helping the ICTR to marshal greater political and financial support in achieving its completion strategy and in support of all the victims of gross violations of human rights. Mrs. Al-Hajjaji is also the Permanent Representative of the Libyan Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.
