Priest Nsengimana transferred to Arusha

Hormidas Nsengimana, a former priest who was Rector of Christ-Roi College in Nyanza, Nyabisindu Commune in Butare Prefecture (Rwanda) was today transferred from Yaoundé, Cameroon to the United Nations Detention Facility in Arusha.

Cameroonian authorities arrested the accused on 21 March 2002 in Yaoundé on the basis of an arrest warrant submitted by the Tribunal. Nsengimana is the fifth clergyman to be arrested at the request of the Tribunal on charges connected with the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

Nsengimana, 48, faces four counts charging him with genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and crimes against humanity for murder and extermination.

The accused is alleged to have played a leading role in a group of killers called Les Dragons (The Dragons) or Escadron de la mort (Death Squad). This group is alleged to have played a crucial role in the killing of Tutsis in and around the Christ-Roi College and in other parts of Butare Prefecture.

Nsengimana will shortly make his initial appearance before a Judge of the Tribunal to answer the charges preferred against him. Duty Counsel will be assigned by the Registrar to represent him until he engages Counsel of his own or is assigned Counsel under the rules of the Tribunal.
